iPhone Golf App | Fun-Swings™ Golf App

The Fun-Swings™ iPhone Golf App is a great tool to help you measure and track your swing performances. There are two ways to enter data. One is to enter data manually and the other is to use the camera to read the grid automatically. The iPhone App then performs all the statistical analysis for you and it also provide data management to allow you to view and modify all your past practices.

The iPhone App measures Direction, Speed and Distance and is now FREE at the Apple App Store!

What can the Iphone App do?

golf swing improvementThe iPhone App measures the direction, speed and distance of your swings. Input data is easy with the iPhone /Android App! Set up the Fun-Swings™ Golf kit and the Smart Phone App. Then, hit 20 balls for the 7 iron for example, with full swings. Enter data manually or use the camera to read the grid automatically. Save the practice, give it a name, like, "My_7_iron_Full_Swing", and then perform statistical analysis on the current practice. The probabilities will be calculated and saved. You can then work on the other clubs. After you have finished all the clubs, you can go to "My measurement" to look at the probabilities for all your clubs. Please note than if you shoot more balls, the estimation would be more accurate, but you certainly do not want to shoot too much as when you are tired your swings will not be as consistent as you could be. Also, please note you need to adjust the height of target panel and/or the distance from the pad to the wall before you starts to measure your swings for a different club.

The Fun-Swings™ IPhone /Android Golf App also allows you to save your new practice to an existing practice name. Thus you can now measure and track your performance on all possible combination of clubs and swing types. By saving the practice with a player's name, the App can measure and track the performances of many players, who can actually compete with each other using the statistics.

You can enter practice data manually or through the camera automatically. Note that due to the hardware limitations of Smartphone platforms, while our engineers are continuously perfecting the detection algorithms, the App is not 100% correct in detecting the balls. If you are competing with your buddies, we suggest you use manual input.

How to read the Error bar charts?

The position of a point is the mean of the error and the heights of the stick on that point is the associated standard deviation. In an ideal case, as you practice and make correct swing adjustment, you would see the mean become closer to zero and error bars would become shorter and shorter.

How does the Fun-Swings™ iPhone Golf App perform the measurement?

The measurement starts with the grid on the target panel. Each time a ball lands on the target, you can read the horizontal value and vertical value of the landing position. To the left of the center, horizontal values would be negative. Beneath center, the vertical value would be negative. Then we can use the grid to calculate the statistics using the following equations:

Assume that you have hit N balls and you have recorded N horizontal values,
xi, i=1,2,…,N
and N vertical values
yi, i=1,2,…,N

The mean values, µx, µy, which represent your systematic errors in horizontal and vertical directions respectively, can be calculated as the following:
µx = (x1 + x2 +…+ xN)/(N-1)
µy = (y1 + y2 +…+ yN)/(N-1)

The standard deviations, σx, σy, which represent your inconsistency errors in horizontal and vertical directions respectively, can be calculated as the following:
σx=[((x1-µx))2 + (x2-µx)2 +…+ (xN-µx)2)/(N-1)]1/2
σy=[((y1-µy))2 + (y2-µy)2 +…+ (yN-µy)2)/(N-1)]1/2

With the means and standard deviation calculated, and with further calculation of correlations between the horizontal and vertical directions, we can estimate the probabilities using various statistical distributions.

It's a lot of recording and it's would be a daunting mathematics problem for most of us. That's why we developed the iPhone/Android application to calculate and track the probabilities.

In the camera mode, the iPhone Golf App will automatically reads the grid and save the values. By touching the "Statistical Analysis" button, the App will perform the swings analysis and gives you all the important statistics for you current practice.
